Conducting Audition Repertoire

Audition recordings are required for all applicants to NEC. After reviewing the recording guidelines, please upload your recording files as part of your online application.

General Requirements

All conducting applicants must submit a video recording showing the applicant conducting a live ensemble as outlined below.

  • The video should show the applicant’s recent work and the applicant's face and upper body should be clearly visible. (Do not submit videos showing only the applicant's back.)
  • Please include the applicant’s name, ensemble conducted, date recorded, and repertoire performed.
  • Please submit separate video files for each work or excerpt.
  • The video and audio must be well synchronized.

Choral

Please note that due to current limitations on recording with live ensembles, footage of rehearsals and performances may be up to one year old prior to date of submission.

The video audition recording should be between 20 and 30 minutes in length and should include the following:

  1. Rehearsal footage showing a frontal view of the applicant and featuring a piece that is in the beginning stages of the rehearsal process.
  2. Performance footage showing a frontal view of the applicant and featuring two works of contrasting styles. Neither of the performance pieces need be the rehearsal piece.
  3. A video recording of an art song of the applicant’s choosing, approximately 3 minutes. You are encouraged to record with accompaniment; pre-recorded accompaniment is acceptable if you are unable to work with a live pianist. If using pre-recorded accompaniment, please ensure that the volume balance allows the accompaniment to be adequately heard.

Selected applicants will be invited to have a virtual interview and examination with Erica Washburn in February. Interview/examination materials will be provided at the time of invitation.
