The Music-in-Education Concentration provides an entry point for students into the field of education while they pursue their degree requirements. Course work completed in the MIE Concentration may lead to advanced Teacher Certification awarded by the Massachusetts Department of Education.
Program Mission
The mission of the Music-In-Education (MIE) Concentration Program is to encourage NEC students to pursue pedagogy, education, guided internships, and teaching to facilitate subsequent career opportunities with arts organizations, schools, and institutions of higher education.
Goals
- Develop NEC students’ awareness of their potential future roles as artist-teacher-scholars.
- Provide flexible and individualized entry points into the field of education for NEC students for both traditional and non-traditional roles.
- Support the development of personal pre-professional portfolios that aid MIE Concentration students in their professional careers.
Open to All Students, Regardless of Year or Major!
The MIE Concentration Program is open to all students at NEC, regardless of major or degree program. There is no separate application process. To participate, students do not need to switch programs, degrees, or show proof of prior teaching experience. Starting in the program is as simple as signing up for a course.
How The Concentration Works
Students are eligible to receive a Music-In-Education Concentration after successful completion of 4 courses and 2 Guided Internships, and a final presentation of their MIE cumulative portfolio. Many courses listed in other departments can also count as Concentration electives. A complete list of such courses can be found in the College Catalog. Please note: MIE Courses are listed as Graduate Level courses, but are open to all undergraduates.
A unique feature of the Concentration program is that MIE department courses can be taken for 0 or 2 credits. (Students taking courses for "0" credits still must register for them through PowerCampus and complete all work for the course.) At least one course designated as an MIE "core" course (MIE 501, 511, or 512), must be taken for 2 credits. The elective courses may be taken for 0 credits if they fall within the MIE department. All students must register and complete at least 2 Guided Internships for 0 credits.
Completion of MIE Courses and Guided Internships, regardless of whether or not they were taken for credit, get listed on student transcripts. The Concentration is listed on the student's diploma after his/her major and degree.
Individualized Opportunities
MIE courses may be taken an any order; depending on your interest, preferences, and schedule! Four MIE courses are offered every semester. Additionally, the Guided Internships provide multiple opportunities for NEC students to learn, perform, and grow in the field of music in education, through self-designed internships or partnerships with affiliated schools and arts organizations. See the Guided Internship entry for more information.
