Student Health Insurance Plan

Frequently Asked Questions: NEC's Student Health Insurance Plan During the Summer Recess

Am I required to get a referral from my school’s Health Center before I seek treatment for a medical or mental health issue during the summer months?

No, a referral is not required with the Student Health Insurance Plan when seeking care during school breaks when the NEC Health and Counseling Center (HCC) is closed, or even when school is in session. There are, however, many benefits to first seeking care or advice from the NEC HCC when school is in session.  The NEC HCC has established close relationships with off-campus providers in the community and can assist you in locating a provider.

Does this plan cover me when I am off campus, traveling or studying abroad?

Yes, the Student Health Insurance Plan covers you during semester breaks, summer vacation, and even if you’re traveling or studying abroad. You’ll be covered for the period for which you are enrolled and premiums are paid.

In addition to being covered for medical treatment and services, you will also be covered for Emergency Medical Evacuation, Repatriation of Remains, Security and Political Evacuation, Natural Disaster Evacuation, and 24-hour worldwide travel assistance services through On Call International. All services must be arranged for in advance and provided by On Call International. Any services not arranged by On Call International will not be considered for payment.

Key Points:

  • When studying or traveling abroad, keep your Student Health Insurance ID card with you and take a copy of the brochure for reference.
  • When outside of the United States, you will likely be asked to pay for your medical care first and will then need to submit for reimbursement. Covered Expenses will likely be reimbursed on an Out-of-Network basis.
  • When you submit claims for reimbursement, you will need to have the itemized bill(s) translated into English and include a letter informing the claims administrator that you are seeking reimbursement for charges previously paid.
  • Please ensure that your name, ID number, address (to receive your reimbursement check), and school’s name are on the bill.

Will I be covered under the plan after I graduate?

You will be covered under the Student Health Insurance Plan until the end of the policy period for which you are enrolled and the premium has been paid. If you enrolled and paid for annual or spring/summer coverage and graduate in the spring, you will be covered until the end of the policy year, which is August 24, 2020 at 11:59 p.m. There is no option to continue coverage after the policy terminates.

Information for the 2023-2024 has now been updated.

Federal and State law requires that all students have health insurance. Please go to the US Department of Health and Human Services to read about the particular laws surrounding the required coverage for all students enrolled in a degree program in the United States. NEC students are automatically enrolled in the NEC Student Health Insurance plan. This plan meets all Federal and State insurance requirements, is comprehensive in nature, and priced competitively to meet the needs of our students. Students may use their own health insurance policy and waive NEC's Student Health Insurance if they can prove that the plan's benefits are of equal or higher value. The student is responsible for waiving the Student Health Insurance plan at the beginning of each academic year.

Health insurance waivers will open in June (date forthcoming). The deadline for waivers is Monday, August 28, 2023.
